ever though about getting into Enduro racing?
Well dont let this Race Report by Rich put you off!
Thought you might wanna brief report from an occasional Top Gear Tuesday nighter…
I feel like I’ve just completed a season of that TV show “Ultimate Fighter”.
Without doubt, the weekend’s 6hour solo race was the single toughest physical thing I’ve ever done! I thought long and hard about that call, and even if I include motorbike racing in 45degree weather, or (more…)
SIZE… Does it really matter? …….29er!
Race Report from Gareth- World 24 hour Champs Canberra
SIZE… Does it really matter?
Having recently competed in the highest profile race of my mtb life to date, pre event I was faced with an interesting dilemma that I’d never had before.
The race was the 24 Hours of Adrenalin World Solo 24 Hour Championships, being held at Mt Stromlo in Canberra ACT. The dilemma, was choosing which of my bikes to race on and which one to use as a backup. The choice was between my own modestly upgraded 26er hardtail, a 2008 Specialized Rockhopper Pro weighting in at just under 12kgs, or the bike supplied to me by my sponsor Top Gear Cycles.
Top Gear Cycles had kindly loaned me a 2009 29er Specialized Stumpjumper FSR. Being an avid 26er hardtail fan and having previously raced 24 hour and 12 hour endurance races on my Rockhopper, I was in all honesty a little reluctant about switching my usual bike for the 29er Stumpy.

back to back worlds
The last two weekends I attended World Championships . Last week in Geelong for the UCI world road race champs, and this week the fat tyres were on show with the Solo 24hr World champs being staged in Canberra.
With this years race being the first time the event had not been held in North America. Over 400 solo riders would take on the challenging course of Stromlo MTB park . For those who haven’t heard about this style of racing , it involves riding your mountain bike over a 20km loop course for as many laps as you can in a 24 hour period.
This year I was helping out Gareth , who is an adopted Aussie but representing Scotland on the day. With Tim and myself in-charge of maintaining two bikes and having all Gareth’s food requirements ready as he passes by our tent every lap in the massive transition area.
There was two races going on inside the race. The Elites went off 15min before the age group start. Our man Gareth racing in the 30 to 34 category, got a great start and was inside the top 50 on the first lap after a 300m run to grab his bike at the start. After 8 hours of racing Gareth sat in 6th spot in his age group looking strong and having minimal stops to refuel. Gareth took two bikes to race on, a Specialized FSR Stumpjumper 29er and a Specialized Rockhopper hard tail. After a practice lap the day before he decided to tackle the tough and rocky course on the dual suspension . As it turned out this was the best decision as many riders came unstuck with the rocky course. The first aid crew were kept very busy all weekend with many riders taken away in the Ambulance…[see photo below]
At 6pm all riders had to start the next laps with their lights attached.Gareth was still going strong riding the (more…)

Paul attard racing in the usa
Topgear Cycles sponsored athlete Paul Attard is currently racing in the USA and here is one of his race reports.
Vineman is held in the Sonoma County in the North of California. This is a big region for Wine with many vineyards and spectacular scenery. I had a very interesting week where I travelled on my own to the race so everyone I met was completely new to me. Except for Michelle the Kiwi and her mum Gail who I had met three weeks earlier at Texas.
I hitched a ride up with Kyle who was from the TCSD. We left on the Wednesday so we could give ourselves plenty of time to get there with no stress. It was good to share the ride with someone who knew their way (more…)
TDF 2010
What started as a casual conversation about watching the 2010 Tour de France, turned into a trip of a lifetime following the 3rd largest sporting event in the world.
With Europe being in the grip of the soccer World Cup and French politics in turmoil with scandels and the banning of the Burqa , the Tour certainly was’nt front page news until the 2nd week.
Our group of 4 ventured to the Haute Savoie region of France with bikes packed with the hope of riding some classic Tour climbs. (more…)
