Boonen wins on his roubaix at roubaix

Tom Boonen confirmed yet again he’s the king of the cobblestones after winning the “queen of the classics” for the third time in five years at Paris-Roubaix on Sunday.
Just a week after Stijn Devolder defended his title at Tour of Flanders aboard a Tarmac SL2, Boonen did the same thing on a muggy, windy Easter Sunday aboard an S-Works Roubaix SL2, giving the pair a unique place in history of the becoming the first teammates to defend their respective victories in the Flanders-Roubaix double.
“To win alone in Roubaix is like a dream,” Boonen said. “I honestly didn’t think I would win today. I didn’t think I had good legs, but I was at the right place at the decisive moment and I started to feel better.”
Winning Roubaix – arguably cycling’s most difficult race with 52.9km of rough cobblestones spread over 27 sections in the 259km run from Compiègne to Roubaix — is never easy, something Boonen was quick to admit.
The Quick Step captain overcame a crash, a mechanical problem and avoided two costly crashes on the decisive Carrefour de l’Arbre cobblestone section with 17km to go to drop an elite group of six leading riders to claim victory in the best possible way.

otway odyssey

We came , we saw, we kicked butt! Well, we all finished in one piece! This weekend a group of friends from Topgear Cycles took on the Otway Odyssey 100km MTB Race. This mountain bike event starts in the coastal town of Apollo Bay and ends up at a small town called Forrest. For mountain bikers Forrest is the Meca of single track riding.
In a nut shell, the course climbs uphill for the first 40km on a mixture of dirt roads and bush tracks. Once you hit the high spot of 570 m you have some fast single track and very ruttered 4wd tracks. This year, the conditions were a far cry from last year’s mud, with dust being a big problem amongst the big pack of over a 1000 riders. With a few nasty spills and some broken bones the riders were greeted with some of the best single track riding you will find in Australia. The last 40km weaves it way around 3 different loops. As tired as you are its a dream track that just keeps on going…. The last loop is 13km and includes a killer of a climb. Once you think you have put all the up hill behind you , course designer John Jacoby puts in a hill he calls the “sledgehammer” Finally the last couple of k’s are fast and flowing and you can enjoy the moment of crossing the finish line knowing you have finish one of the toughest 100km races around.

fundraising update

The Australian cycling community has been busy over the past week, raising money and donating equipment to those who have been affected by the nation’s worst bushfires. Over $42,000 dollars and some 65 bicycles have been donated through various fund raising events over the weekend.

Victorian mountain biking clubs held the first Enduro Series round in aid of the bush fire victims. The event, which was moved from Eildon to the You Yangs due to the devastating bushfires, raised some $35,000 for the Fire Relief Fund. (more…)
